Droids Blood – Be Free (Drunken Sailor Records, 2019)

Droids Blood are from Chicago, and are apparently a new iteration of the band Broken Prayer, a previous project of vocalist Scott Plant and drummer Nick Donahue. Not having been aware of Broken Prayer, I now feel I need to investigate. Probably another example of me being super-uncool. Probably about as close to being Superman as I’ll get, but fuck that dude, he’s the ultimate posterboy for being a clean-shirt.

So what’s the deal then? Does this sound like C3P0 being dismantled by a pack of unruly Ugnaughts? Well, to put it plainly, although this sounds like a classy prospect, it does not sound like that. However, I think if I was to attempt some kind of comparison I’d be heading down the route of Flipper, Fugazi, Roddy Bottum from Faith No More and Vangelis in some kind of ritual chainsaw combat. I’m aware that I often make spurious statements of this kind. It’s just kind of how I explain stuff to myself that I barely understand or something. The important thing to take away from this, is that this is cool as fuck, mate. When you add in Scott Plant’s vocal, which remind me somewhat of something between Dan Yemin of Paint It Black and Jeff Pezatti from Naked Raygun, it’s quite the concoction.

Once again, Julian has demonstrated a talent for choosing his Drunken Sailor releases very wisely. With Be Free, the overall quality of releases on this label remain as high as ever, and as I’ve come to expect. Tony of Nurgle rating: 9.5/10.
